Consumed by Violence
- Regina Del Rio
As a Mexican woman it is extremely painful and horrifying to see the current state of violence in Mexico, especially against women. Statistics show that 10 women are being murdered everyday just because of their gender. This ongoing and growing issue has sparked many social movements, such as a nationwide protest on March 8th and a "day without women" on March 9th. Not being able to attend these, I have decided to show my support through this project. I created a 3D portrait of a woman who represents all women in Mexico. 60% of Mexican women have been victims of physical or sexual abuse, this is why this percentage of the portrait has been burnt. I decided to use matches to have a stronger visual impact on the audience and help get the message across. Abuse creates lifelong irreparable damage, just like a match that has been burnt can never be lit again.

Not A Monster
- Nirbhay Kwatra
Not A Monster is an interactive experience which puts you in the shoes of someone who suffers from anxiety and panic. Through their eyes, Not A Monster is meant to highlight the nature of mental illness and to destigmatize the idea of living with a mental health disorder. The experience focuses on the debilitating and uncontrollable nature of mental health disorders and shows it not as something to be feared or treated as a problem, but as something which is intrinsic and just as much a part of a you as any other traits you have and should be treated as such. The focus is on recovery, healing and embracing the intrinsic qualities that make you who you are. I chose the medium of games for the unique aspect they provide: interaction. Being in the shoes of someone connects you better than just watching them.

The Second Sex
- Chenyu Hao
What inspired me to create this animation is I have seen the gradual distortion of "feminism" by the public, and the further deepening of the contradiction between male and female. This animation takes the French writer Beauvoir's the Second Sex as a reference. The Second Sex makes a profound analysis of why women gradually become the second sex, and points out how women get rid of this inferior status. This animation only shows the reasons why women become secondary sex. I hope the audience can have a deeper understanding of feminism after watching this animation, and understand that feminism does not regard men as the enemy or infringe on men's rights.

Listen Too Me
- Sophia Duerre
My main focus for this project was to highlight the struggle these women and others like them face when speaking out on sexual abuse. From the start I knew I wanted to focus on the case that sparked the “Me Too” movement, the Harvey Weinstein case. I chose the five women who publicly took the stand against Weinstein because they were the ones who received the most backlash from the media and entertainment industry. This backlash was the exact reason these women were so afraid to speak up originally. My goal was to bring to light the distasteful treatment sexual assault and rape victims often get when speaking about their experiences. I chose embroidery and paint as my mediums because I wanted something very personal and hands on to portray the harsh reality of this situation. I hope this sparks a conversation on how to appropriately treat victims of assault.

Drag Club
- Enrico Torres
We all have sides, good sides, bad sides, sides we don't even imagine having and with this project this is exactly what I wanted to show my classmates. The Drag Club was the most fun and enjoyable experience for the simple fact that it is everything I love to do, bringing joy to people while surprising them with something they did not expect to see. Making use of drawing, digital coloring, texture overlay and my passion for drag culture, I transformed my VFS peers into personas that they have never seen before. The message I want to send, not just to them but to everyone, is that: No matter who you are, where you come from, what you believe in, we can always be someone new.

Where Does Your Home Live
- Victoria Kataeva
Many people take great comfort in the feeling of home. Although each person defines this feeling differently, it becomes clear there’s a strong emotional connection between an individual and one’s perception of home. My work is an examination of this connection. In my short film I show the process of a tile craft creation that represents a Russian panel residency building, so-called Khrushchevka, in which I have grown up and therefore associate with home. This process is accompanied by the self-composed poem which defines what home is for me. With my project I aim to demonstrate the importance of my personal connection to home as it has played an essential role in shaping my identity; as well as to convey the idea that my home lives within me.

Meltist
- Lingke Zhang
Who are you? What makes you you? I've been thinking of this a lot recently. First, I find it important to accept any one of you, to accept your laziness, your bad temper, or your bad habits, and also your hard work, your patience, and your personality. The fact is, without any one of them, you are not you. Even if it's bad, that's who you truly are. There's no perfect person in the world, so try to find a balance between bad and good, instead of cutting them out. However, later I realized that the most important thing in the world is not myself, it is my family. If I lose my family, I lose me. To you, you might find it different, but, be brave to be what you truly are, be you.

Threading The Needle
- Kurtis Dawes
It’s always a treat to get to watch something grow up. In the case of my project, the subject is my dog, Whately, who I’ve had since she was a four-month-old puppy. I wanted to try and incorporate her into my project somehow. I decided to take a short video of her jumping, and turn it into a stop motion using embroidery as the medium. There was a total of 20 canvases, each being used for a separate frame of the initial clip of the jump. There were also approximately 400 pictures in the project, all but 18 being used for the beginning and ending sections.

Golden Navel
- Eugene Kim
I've always wanted to make my own characters, and have these characters play together in a band. To me, this exhibition project was a good chance to do that. I developed my four members starting with the baseline of making each member's background before designing their looks. This whole process was a unique experience for me and I enjoyed it a lot. The poster design was quite difficult for me, These four members all have a different taste of music genre. Rock, Country, Blues, 80s R&B, Synthpop, City Pop, and Jazz. Adding all these elements to one poster was a difficult job, I had also worried the result might look too unordered and complicated but contrary to my first expectation the poster was quite good and I’m happy with that.

Vicky & Vicki
- GuoXu Zhao
In daily life, many people around me call me Vicky when they communicate with me. The inspiration of this project came from here. Vicky is an alter ego created by me. She is a Chinese woman with a height of about 6 feet. The two patterns on her Cheongsam represent her Chinese Zodiac -- snake and constellation -- Aries. She has the temperament of a traditional Oriental beauty with a touch of radicalism and boldness.

Monster Don't Sleep Under Your Bed, They Sleep Inside Your Head
- Legacy Bartel
Monsters define our fears. We grow up fearing them and then conquering them, but some of us still have that monster we fear. The series " Monster Don't Sleep Under Your Bed. They Sleep Inside Your Head " is based on childhood fears, and follows my greatest childhood fear " Anxiety ". This series starts off with 3 art pieces. "Chained" is the main piece of the series, and it starts with a girl being chained to a controlling shadow as her fate. The next pieces are “Silenced” and “Heart - Eat” and they represent that aching pain of not being able to speak and control the pain in your heart. But as the feeling of sadness prevails, there are always bright beautiful colours (colourful cracks) around to bring joy and happiness in each situation.

By the Sea
- Ryan Lehmann
For my project I wanted to do a digital painting of a character while attempting to follow a style similar to that of the concept artists that I have admired throughout my life. This project was also a way for me to practice and develop my digital painting skills by learning new digital painting techniques. The painting itself is larger than anything I’ve done before, so it was quite a challenge for me. The character itself is from a dungeons and dragons campaign, I chose him specifically because I thought he was an interesting character. The title is in reference to the fact the character is standing menacingly by the sea.

Pit of the Eternal Circle
- Mete San
In my work I attempt to create a sense of a story about the emotional and spiritual growth of mankind, using abstract fundamental tools that humans have developed until now and by transferring energy one to another such as love, consciousness, awareness and illusion of the past and its effects on present time. In a nutshell, the subject of the story is to meet a challenge and refuse what he sees himself and start to search what it actually is. I think this attempt is the most critical step for more progress which we could say is the breaking point of the illusion. Nowadays, most people don't want to cross that line and don't want to spoil what they stick to in their life. İn my perspective, I see this section as an eternal pit, round and round, until the spiritual form of consciousness is obtained in the depth of the pit. Everybody should fall there before they rise again.

Home
- Aurora Weston
Home takes the memory from the mind of a little girl and creates it into a piece to look at and remember forever. Memories are so important they are pieces of our past that we hold onto in our hearts to look back on. They can make us happy or we can learn from them. In Home the girl's memory is of her dad and her at a lake taking in the scenery. It shows the relationship between a father and daughter and how when she's with him she feels safe and at home. Unfortunately, as she grows older she will have to leave him and live on her own. Although she can always come back to him and to her memories of all the good times with him.
Home is a very personal piece to me that I am glad to share.

Apocalypse
- Than Waeohongsa
Thailand is under a military regime right now. This affects both the economy and freedom of speech. Many people get arrested for speaking against the government. People got oppressed under the military regime. Many businesses have closed down due to financial problems which are the result of poor management and leadership of the government who never bothers to help its citizens. My project is 3 paintings depicting the political state in Thailand and how people are oppressed by the military regime. I choose to do them in a surreal art style to portray these issues in a more raw and impactful way with an apocalyptic feel to show how we feel about the situation in our country right now.

Feasting
During COVID-19 in Thailand, many people lost their jobs and many business have closed down because of the economic crisis from the pandemic. Instead of helping people and supporting their finances, the military government used their money to buy weapons from other countries. The weapons cost billions, while leaving their people to struggle with the excuse that they don't have enough money to support that many people. Some low income people have to give all of their money to support their community. Many people took their life after the crisis while the military are feasting and celebrating. This painting depicts people dying and begging for help while the junta leaders are having dinner on their luxury dinning table, ignoring all the struggling people behind them.
Cannibal
In Thailand, the military has intervened in most aspects of society for a long time. Every Thai men has to enlist with the military even though there is no war for them to fight. The Military also makes Thai people believe that the only way to fully serve the country is to become a soldier. Most media are under control of the military. This is the result of many coups throughout the decades. My painting depicts a soldier eating people alive. This shows how the military takes away freedom of people to serve on their power, feeding on people's wealth and liberty.
Birth of a Nation
Throughout Thailand's history, there have been several democracy protests that have happened. Most of them ended up in massacre. Many unarmed innocents were framed as 'terrorists' and killed mercilessly by the military. During October 14th, 1973 and October 6th, 1976, many people were killed by both the military and angered crowds who were lead by propaganda that news outlets provided to frame the protesters. In May of 2010, or the ‘Black May Incident’, the military opened fire at protesters, killing not only unarmed protesters but also a nurse who was helping people in the temple and citizens who were passing by during that time. Protesters were branded as terrorists by the government. Some cases also got brought up by junta government and its' supporters as a threat to future protesters. People who ordered the massacre have yet to be punished. This work portrays how Thailand’s history and its’ glory was made over the death of thousands of innocents.
That Girl
- Maria Marin
That Girl is a project that came to be from a poem that I sketched a couple of years ago. I decided to bring this poem to life by transforming it into an oil painting in a 1 by 1.4 meter canvas and documenting the process. I recently found myself wondering if I was on the right path if this was supposed to be it. I had so many thoughts and ideas and a feeling of uncertainty that I couldn’t shake. Finding this poem in my old notebook made me remember that there will always be a part of you that wonders but you need to keep going even if you feel lost because finding yourself, again and again, gives meaning to every moment and it encourages you to learn and explore every day a bit more. That’s how I decide to see it, appreciating the feeling of learning.

Where's That Crowbar
- Noah Oxenbury
The film "Where's that crowbar" is a silly comedy about two robber's named Marco and Dave. Marco is on the smarter side and more the cautious type than anything. Dave however is on the goofier side and does not know how to pack essentials. They are incredibly good friends, but they do not work well together. The idea came to me because of the movie "Home Alone". I really like the relationship between the two robbers, so I decided to do a film based on that. I created this film because I love making others laugh and smile. It makes me happy when I can make someone laugh. My goal for this project was to film a successful comedic film for others. I hope that you will enjoy my film and it will make you chuckle.

Seeing Under
- Hao Cai
Seeing Under is an interactive painting. The decision of the audience will effect how the painting takes its form. The piece is created by forming two canvas into one. By opening the zipper on the first canvas, the second canvas will show. On the second canvas are texts arranged in the shape of a penis. The purpose of this piece is to dispute whether erotic literature be prohibited due to its erotic nature or be preserved as literature that is an arrangement of letters and words. By opening or closing the zipper on the first canvas, the audience can choose whether the texts should be shown or hidden.

I’m Okay
- Jill Tao
"How are you?"
"i'm okay"
But are you really okay?
"I'm Okay" is the first oil painting that I created. as a person who has been dealing with depression for years, I fight for my mental health everyday in ways most people will never understand. So I always want to use my art works to let more people understand the importance of mental health. I created the first painting when I was extremely depressed, I used black as "monster" clouds and red as the rain drops. It looks like blood, but death was all I can think of when I was depressed. It is hard to use oil painting to express my mood, so I learned a lot thought daily painting. I still hope and believe mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and a positive mental attitude is determined by you, not others. All the kids are depressed, you are not alone.

Emerland Gem
- Jonathan Alexander Koeswanto
As a kid, I grew up watching a bunch of cartoons without ever imagine how they made them. The cartoon is one of my favourite entertainment forms. As a teenager, I am still interested in a kind of cartoon which is known as Japanese Anime. One thing for sure, there is always a character in every animation story. In this project, I am experimenting with creating three characters which I was challenged to make with Flash background information. I started drawing them classically and transferred them digitally. These three characters are possibly used in a cartoon animation series.

Detachment
- Maud Robinson Spence
Our connection with one another has always been important, this has become even more apparent during the pandemic. When we lack that social interaction and intimacy we must venture out and try to find different, if not deeper connections with ourselves and the environment around us. Nature has been an integral part of how Northern Canadians have been staying connected during this uncertain time. Big sky and open waters allow us to access and appreciate what has been with us all along. I have often taken for granted the expansiveness and richness of the landscape in Yellowknife. As humans we’re always searching for something more. Oftentimes, if we would allow ourselves to slow down, what we need more than what we want can be right in front of us the whole time. Detachment examines our connection to the land through the juxtaposition of lines, symmetry and natural elements.
