Overwhelmed
- Jayden LeClaire

This piece was made due to the ever-increasing amount of plastics that inhabit our oceans and waters. According to reports, we may have more plastic than fish in our waters by 2050. Regarding the techniques I used in the making of this piece, I chose origami, as paper is a common alternative to single-use plastics. It decomposes much quicker than the ~1000 years it takes for plastic to break down in water. I have created an assortment of origami sea-life and arranged them into the shape of a plastic bottle: a common piece of plastic waste In the oceans. I chose to make this because I am young and would hope to see a long future. 2050 is merely 30 years away. It’s a terrifying thought to imagine how and when the world will end. I’d hope we can at least try to save it.

The Tapes
- Nadine Widjaja

Are we a product of manipulation? How much of the world is true? Are we living in the post-truth era? These are questions that I asked myself when I created "The Tapes". With various editing techniques, as well as utilizing deepfake software that allows the computer to manipulate facial features, I've created a short video that intends to show how the media, the internet, and the world are blurring the lines between fact and fiction. If a college kid with a computer, like myself, could create a "fake" video like the one above, imagine what someone with better resources and more urgent motives can do in the name of a lie. Manipulation and deception will always be a part of our lives and it's up to us to determine if we're willing to succumb to the lying world or emerge victorious by being more critical of what we consume.

Just Take It
- Francisca Chonlong

A girl makes a deal with the devil in order to get her revenge in exchange for finding the killer who murdered the devil. This work revolves around human psychology and the thoughts and actions that are powered by it. This story focuses on a character that is sad yet relatable to a lot of people who have gone through the same hardships and experiences. This comic tries to evoke an emotion of empathy and engage the reader in the events, line of thought and mental battles within the mind of the main character. For these pages, the digital process that I use can be broken down into 4 steps; first the sketches, then line art, details and light values. When choosing the art style, I opted for something chaotic with many details in order to showcase all of the intense emotions and increase the intensity of the situation.

In The Clouds
- Samuel Febrian Adhitya

My work explores my capabilities by creating something I like, combining music and video. Visually, there are some parts I shot myself with my phone camera, which turned out pretty well. Sonically, it’s pretty hard to rely only on the melodies with no vocals as support. I had to include a lot of layers with different sounds that complement each other to create something that feels “big.” The main idea came to me from when I was trying the melodies, then the distinct sound slowly developed. It feels a bit airy. I then rationalized and incorporated that feeling into the visuals a little bit and took inspiration from what is quite interesting to me. I made it to express the desire to feel free and describe the world of today where how we are going all digital and are somehow governed by money, whether we like it or not.

(Gole Amin) / Amen Flower
- Yasaman Fazelinejad

The Amen flower is a symbol of faith and germination in Persian culture. It will rise in any season, and only in your hopeless moments will it fade; hope is everything to humanity and you! You can let it grow only by being faithful! These days wind is blowing; you can build a wall or you can create a windmill. Good and evil are a question of perspective, and today your view will develop your personality. The world is round just to let you know that when you reach the end and feel this is the last chapter of your story, you are really at the beginning. You have to ponder Hope and Growth. This is your decision; this is your time, “Tick Tack. Tick Tack.”

Materials/Tech: Six pieces of Thin layer wood (40*9 cm) / Three different tile type (White/Black/Bright white) / Wood Glue / Grout / Acrylic paint colors

Birds won’t sing
- Suting Liao

This project is a 2D loop animation. The theme is fragmented and it contains a collection of images. The elements I selected for the connection of the various pictures are wind, light, and birds. All the dynamics shown in this video are related to the route of the wind. The overall inspiration of the work comes from the fragmented art information and short thoughts that I grabbed. They affect each other and blend with each other, but they also exist independently of each other. Each segment can be summarized with short sentences or just a word and each story is cyclical, extending quietly. This imperfect work is a flashback: everything happens in silence, everything is going back and forth and repeating itself. Days are long, the night will never come. Even the birds in the dream never sing a song. Maybe they’re just waiting for the summer to pass.

The Human Nature of Animals
- Abhishek Varun

This project is an absurd existential comedy. The format of the project is a stop motion animation. I choose this style to discover the technical and aesthetic qualities of the format and to create something physical and tangible. It explores the theme of “Csikszentmihalyi's flow Chart“ which concerns mental health. Since, the recent Covid crisis many people have been commenting "how life has no meaning" whatsoever. It made me wonder about about getting trapped inside a box. The couple are stuck in a rut in their marriage. So, when nothing is moving in your life and everything is mundane and a burden, words lose their meaning. Since people cannot escape the box , they just succumb to their ordinary impulses, trying to find some meaning through shopping, gossiping and saying words without any sense of emotion. If human existence loses sense, there is no meaning in life

Lock Smith
- Sara Lee

My project is a short dance animation. The genre is hip hop. I filmed a video of me dancing and I converted that into an animation. I conveyed what I felt towards the music through the dance and I tried to portray the music in the backgrounds. I used oil pastels and abstract painting brushes using Procreate software. For the backgrounds and the dance I used a simple figure. I’m a dancer but also I’m an artist. I always thought I would be a famous dancer and I would be successful in the field. However, things have changed a lot in my life and I completely changed my mind. Now I want to be an animator and my time is spent more on school since I changed my mind. So, by using this opportunity I wanted to prove that I’m still passionate about dance and that is the reason why I chose this particular project.

Nature’s Carousel
- Angeline Janice Rosadi

Growing up in a bustling city called Jakarta, I was used to high rise buildings and busy traffic everywhere I go. For a long time, I thought the rest of Indonesia was like Jakarta, polluted and over populated. It took me awhile and a lot of traveling outside the city for me to realise that Jakarta is very different than the rest of Indonesia. Going to Bali, Belitung, Raja Ampat, and many more places made me appreciate this country more and more. This sculpture is my way of showing my appreciation to this country that I call my home. This sculpture has 4 sections to it, each representing different ecosystems that exist in Indonesia: Bali rainforest, Komodo Island, Krakatau volcano, and a coral reef. I chose paper as my medium because paper is very versatile and eco-friendly. It also fits the style I’m going for for this sculpture.

I see the sky
- Diana Zhalgas

Isolation became mentally challenging for everyone during the pandemic. People started to value their freedom. At this time, the skies became a source of freedom and calmness for me: whilst travelling from Vancouver back home to Almaty, I had 3 flights. I spent about 30 hours looking at the sky from the plane. I now study between 10 pm to 9 am due to the time difference, giving me the chance to enjoy daily sunrises while I am studying. I was surrounded by skies during all my journey during the pandemic, and so it became my topic of choice.

‘I See the Sky’ was my first digital drawing project. I always wanted to master digital drawing, so I challenged myself to draw skies digitally and make very short animation using Photoshop and After Effects.

Pneuma

-Nadia Boldbaatar

The project ‘Pneuma’ allowed me to explore the world of vehicle design.
It can be difficult to narrow down ideas, especially when one idea can inspire many more. I’ve learned that it is not easy to pick one idea and stick to it, when you have no clue where it might lead you. I was surprised to find that I prefer simple and coherent shapes over complicated designs. The simplicity is reflected in the design and concept of the car. ‘Pneuma’ proved to be a fun and an enjoyable experience

I’d like to have the car made someday and drive it somewhere nice.

Core Strengths
- Rebecca Foster

In our fast-paced modern society with the undeniable influence of social media, it can feel like we are falling short if we don’t have several unique talents to show for ourselves. It is easy to forget that we are all born with natural strengths. Created in Adobe XD, Core Strengths is an interactive experience that prompts viewers to consider their most valued attribute. I used nature-related imagery (e.g., mountains, clouds) and simple pastel colors to underscore this reconnection with a more natural part of themselves. Ultimately, Core Strengths reminds viewers of the power of their inborn strengths and suggests that we have so much to offer the world by way of who we are, not just what we can do.

The Empty City
- Siyuan Liu

“Empty City” is a series of photographs that captures Vancouver’s empty streets during the pandemic. With the government's call to close businesses and schools, the streets of Vancouver lost their former vitality. The photos show scenes that are out of the ordinary; an extraordinary view of Vancouver which will stand in history as a testimony to the 2020 pandemic.

I focus on composition, light, and shadow to capture the beauty of loneliness in Vancouver. After taking the photos, I applied suitable filters to best show the desired effect, emotion and theme.

Pua Kumbu
- Nur Sarah Muslim

Pua' Kumbu is a representation of Sarawakian culture, including the Hornbill and Pua' Kumbu. The Hornbill is an important cultural symbol for the people in Sarawak especially in the Dayak tribe. It signifies the spirit of god and must be treated with respect. The headhunter warrior of the Dayak tribe wears a headpiece made of Hornbill feathers in ceremonies and battles honouring the bird.

The Pua Kumbu is a hand-woven textile at the heart of Iban culture. It is a sacred and important piece of cloth for every family of the tribe. The dye that made up the pattern of Pua Kumbu is made from the flora found in the rainforest of Borneo. For this art piece I painted the hornbill and hand-stitched the Pua Kumbu pattern as a modern homage to my heritage.

Past And Future
- Jimmy Huang

Past and Future was inspired by miniature drawings and the elements of the video game “Monument Valley”. The game is about a girl name Ida who travels between the different isometric and impossible-object worlds. I created Past and Future to showcase my iPad Illustration skills and to challenge myself to create small characters. The original title was going to be called “Where’s Jimmy?”, which was inspired by “Where’s Waldo?” type of paintings. However, due to project planning and time considerations, the name was changed.

Synthesis of the Photo
- Sam Wang

FD_T4_Draw4_Exhibit_FD99 Sam Wang2.JPG

All photographs are captured with an intention. Every photographer has their own style. Some aim to capture truth and reality whilst other’s present the viewer with feelings like positivity or negativity. The photographer Yenglin Tan combines his photographs to create a narrative and a new meaning . In ‘Synthesis of the Photo’, I took inspiration from Yenglin Tan’s unique style. I employed a photo-merging method to create a series of images full of meaning and feeling.
