THE BALANCING ACT
- Brit Atkinson
For my project I decided to make a sculpture that represents the subtle and gradual loss of creativity as we grow older and push aside creative thought processes in our everyday life. I molded a brain that sits in “a box” covered with the harsh realities of adult life; phone bills, savings plans, cover letters, resumes, hydro bills, etc.; things we have to focus on more as we age. However, from the brain is a twist of wire (a brainstorm) covered in script pages, art, music notes, all things that represent creativity and creative thinking. This storm spins up and around the box but in a way meant to demonstrate how they can coexist with each other. There is absolutely the possibility of a balance between child-like exploration and adult-like exploitation. As Mr. Disney put it, “that’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up.”
Materials/Tech: homemade Playdough, paper-mache paste, colored pencils, paper, wiring, plywood, glue.
LIGHTBOX
- Carl Ellingsen
As digital artists, we often spend days on end staring at a computer screen, slowly crafting the pixels to display what we want. However, we often are oblivious to how our movements are translated into the different colors and spaces on the monitor. My project, LightBox, explores this idea by being a scaled-up display. Each LED has a red, green, and blue channel that can be a value between 0 (off), and 255 (full). The 255 number comes from their being a byte of data, or 8 bits, which 2^8 = 255. Using a set of 8 switches on the control panel, anyone can select a pixel by its column and row, then set what color it is by changing it red, green, and blue channels. I expect that after interacting with the LightBox, viewers will have a better understanding of how we control technology.
This link goes to an online version of the LightBox project so viewers can have a similar interaction to what it would be like in person. Email me if there are any concerns or issues with accessing the site.
Nightmare
- Rena Ding
This project is a 2 minutes music video called “Nightmare”. I think a person's nightmares can reflect their thoughts, weaknesses and what they fear. In fact, dreaming is a normal psychological phenomenon in the process of sleep. Therefore, my video focuses more on the state after having nightmares, depressed and haunted by them. This story is about a happy and sweet girl. Her best friend died because of an accident. No kids will play with her. She feels lonely. She seems to get used to this situation as she is growing. However, she knows that what people see as her normal behavior is all fake and she has a nightmare for many years that she can’t escape from from.
7
- Aline Boas
7 is a project where I envisioned how the 7 deadly sins would look like if I personified them. I carefully designed and sketched out each sin (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride) and materialized these ideas into sculptures. I used Femo and Sculpey as my sculpting materials and used Acrylics to add colour.
I chose this topic because it is a well known concept, meaning that the sculptures become an interactive experience because my audience might want to guess which sculpture is which, based on their own interpretation of each sin.
Furthermore, I chose to sculpt because I hadn’t experienced it before. The idea of bringing my sketches to life appealed to me and seemed like a great opportunity to learn more. Through this process I gained a deeper understanding of how sculpting works and I discovered a skill I didn’t know I had.
STREET CLOTHES
- Junie Xiu
I believe you will also like to pay attention to the differences in clothing of people in different countries and cultures. Even in the leisure style of daily life, western countries and Eastern countries have very different street styles. In the same weather and temperature, some people go out in short sleeve T-shirts, while others wear warm sweaters. This work of art is about the recording and exploration of street clothes. I collected the profiles of these characters extensively and recorded the moments when they walked past the camera. Then I cut out the characters and put them all on a white background. Finally, I used video clip technology to synthesize these images into a smooth dynamic motion video.
I hope you can gain some knowledge and feel relaxed after watching this interesting video recording of street clothes and can have a greater interest in street fashion and art.
LADYLIKE
- Ainez Neshan
In my creative work, I have used skills such as drawing and painting to represent the mistreatment and objectification of women in current society through the words that are carelessly used to describe women. As a young female who has constantly heard these words, it is degrading and has negatively affected my mindset. By creating this piece, I was hoping I could show the visual aspect of what such words can do to someone.
GOLDEN TRASH KALEIDOSCOPE
- Carol Li
What you see among a pile of trash depends on your imagination. Golden Trash Kaleidoscope is a material art sculpture formed from numerous pieces of scrap materials painted in gold, with a kaleidoscope installed inside showing a video of motion graphics about the scrap materials in use. The theme behind the Golden Trash Kaleidoscope is to tell the audience to see beautiful things inside of trash. The meaning of the trash here also represents the bad things that happen every day around your life. See things differently and find the beauty among the trash.
DIE DOING WHAT I LOVE
- Allen Li
Die Doing What I Love is a project with two digital drawings and one title page (for presentation).
When it comes to subject matter, I chose a police officer and a gangster because their position in society is extremely opposite. In the drawing, the direction they are facing and the pose are also opposite. The death of the gangster is romantic, with his middle finger up to deliver his last message to this world. The police officer is also trying to deliver his last message but with his duty he chose to inform his colleagues through his walky-talky. Everything they do is the opposite of each other, but when it comes to their own life value, they both died doing what they loved.
THE BROKEN CEILING
- Eve Partridge
In my sculpture, I wanted to show the objectification of women through art. The box represents the metaphorical box women are put into to only be certain things. I covered the paintings of oppression in labels that women were most frequently called. I then added a plaster hand sticking out of a broken plexiglass roof to symbolize the metaphor of “breaking the glass ceiling.” The hand has names of 14 women who have made history by breaking into the “man’s workplace.” In this piece I hoped to portray the struggles that women have faced over time while simultaneously honouring the strong women of history.
Materials used: wood, acrylic paint, plaster, sharpie, plexiglass
AR SHODO “
The Transcended Brush Strokes”
- Inake Brasco Montano
Before the COVID-19 outbreak, my original plan for this project was to learn and practice the traditional Shodo technique and do a classic exhibition on giant canvases. However, due to the particular set of events, I was forced to rethink my project and leave all my materials behind back in Vancouver. So, for my project I decided to change the form of presenting the project without changing the content. I would still learn classic Shodo. The first thing I did was to create a brush on the Procreate app that resembled a traditional Shodo brush and ink as much as possible. This was by far the most challenging part. After that I just practiced until I was happy with the results and divided each stroke by layers. For the last part, I put everything into an AR file and made a video.
UNEXPECTED
- Jasmine Hans
Unexpected is about how unexpected life is. My project starts with a normal person sitting and relaxing in their living room and then we see the person dead. Not only is the person dead but he was viciously murdered. This was created by making a plain white diorama and then cutting and pasting elements and texture made digitally onto the diorama. The person on the couch is made with clay and paint. After this was completed I took a photo of the project and then brought it into an editing software to add extra details and the transition. The way my project is done is also the way it would be done in the animation software “Maya”. While everyone is trying to replicate real life in “Maya” and other digital or modeling software, I have done the opposite. I’ve done what the modeling part of “Maya” does but in real life.
Let the Mind Fly
-
Moya Ma
“The Freedom of Creation” is always something I want to express in my work. Therefore, I created two oil paintings about different environments for creating art. I have seen many good works in my place - some of them survived, but some of them were “purified”, even blocked by the censorship. Probably everything started with a good thought: to protect the majority from violence, eroticism, even just insecurity. However, many marginalized people are ignored, excluded from the environment and eventually they disappear into the crowd. The public became more sensitive and the restrictions became tighter. My idea is that everyone deserves a chance to speak out about their perspective in this world - even if sometimes it is against the capitals or politics, it is a basic human right that I believe everyone should have. I will fight for it with people who also yearn for it.
TO THE TOP
- Ryan Elmer
For my discovery project I chose to do a comic book. The main reason I chose a comic is because I have always read and wanted to create one but did not know all the skills needed to complete one in its entirety. I chose to focus my story on a fallen angel named Michael who chooses to defy his father by going on a murderous rampage against a crime ring in New York. However, I focused more on the visual storytelling than the written story in an effort to give the reader freedom to think for themselves what and why things are happening. I created this comic using mainly Illustrator and Photoshop. I used reference photos, stock images and drawings and from there I decided to add no more than 20% color to the panels in an effort to highlight certain attributes.
THE PERSONALIZED HOME SERVICE DROID
- Dawson Van Zoost
My goal was to create a small 3D robot In Blender. This would require me to learn how to use new software and model as well as pose the robot myself. I created a robot that would be able to navigate over uneven terrain to allow it to move to any area of a home. It has two arms to be able to do work any human could do. It has a voice box for communication with humans. It includes a large external battery for easy replacement and recharge. It has a small sleek design and stands at about four feet tall.
DESTRUCTION&CREATION
- Marina Maeski
This project consists of two parts, a sculpture made entirely with found objects, and a video of the process as well as found footage and homemade videos of my own. I walked around the neighborhood looking for any interesting objects near dumpsters. Once I was happy with what I found I cleaned every item, photographed them and started dismantling the bigger objects. Then I started to put the parts together all while recording the process with an old camcorder that I bought online (which in a way is also a found object). The camera came with three VHS-C tapes with some footage recorded on it that I decided to also include in the video.
The concept of the final piece is something that resembles a human head. That and the video dialogue explore the idea that as humans we are constantly going through a process of disassembling and recreating ourselves.
OVERGROWN Mixed Media Sculpture
- Bella Duprey
Overgrown is a depiction of what experiencing intrusive thinking is like for me. I used a combination of canvas, Sculpey, epoxy, and acrylic paint. I created this piece with the intention of making it visually distressing and anxiety provoking to convey the emotions associated with intrusive thinking. I speckled the surface of the black sculpture with tiny holes and ridges to create instability and tinted the epoxy black to bring a gross and gritty feeling. I aim to provoke strong emotion with this piece and to make the viewer think deeper into the root feeling behind these reactions.
STUCK IN THE FUTURE
- BATI BALTA
The goal of this project was to show how time flies by us quickly and we can do nothing to stop it. We cannot go back in time but we can re-live the beautiful memories we had from those days. The reason I made this project is that I have been going back to old photos and videos recently trying to capture the happiness and calm I used to have, mostly in the year 2008. Here in the project is what I remember of my room from the past in a glass cube with a model hugging as if he/she is trying to get in it while being tamed by time. To show this, the model is wrapped with a rope holding it back. Everything was done in Maya.
MY PARENTS’ FIRST PORTRAIT
- Heesu Kim
I chose this project because my family didn't have a family photo, so I wanted to make something special for my parents. I put a photo of my parents on the wood panel and drove nails along the face lines. Then, I removed the photo and tied thread between the nails to form the shape of the faces. Then, I emphasized the details by repeating the thread ties several times. I've used two wood panels, several kinds of nails, white thread, black thread, and hammer.
UNTITLED
- Maisie Cho
In my whole life, one of my biggest accomplishments is enrolling in the Vancouver Film School because I have learned more about so many things that I have been interested in. To represent my glorious experience at VFS in Foundation 98, I drew my classmates. The reason they are special for me is that they are kind and help me a lot when I have difficulties with English. During this project, what I focused on the most was to describe them very well so they can identify themselves easily when they see my artwork. In terms of the process, the factor I put the most effort into was accurately showing each of their identities because when I create art, I usually get inspired by my acquaintances, especially their personalities. Accordingly, drawing my classmates in Foundation 98 is based on my hope to remember them and my interest in describing human personalities. That is why I decided make this artwork.
SPECIAL MAP
- Mango Huang
My final project is to use chicken bones to make a map of China, because the map really does look like a chicken. I just used chicken bones to make the outline and them on a glass plate. For the province lines/names, I used Photoshop to drawing on top. I also added some brown gravel to make the whole thing look fuller.
LETTERS
- Liyah Ali Kahn
This project was inspired by a condition called synesthesia. The specific condition that I have is called Ordinal Linguistic Personification, the personification of letters. Everyone experiences synesthesia differently. I’ve discussed it with other people who have synesthesia, and I learned that we all see our letters in different, very specific colors, followed by even more specific personalities or “vibes”. The objective of this piece is to force other people into my shoes, even if they may not understand or see it at all. Humans tend to feel a lot of empathy, even towards materialistic things. I wanted to experiment with that, and observe how people respond to my letters. I’m hoping to see them form a personal connection with at least one of them, either because they relate to it or because the personality of that letter is more prominent than others.
E12-45 Plasma Railgun
- Anthrey Nadricko Zeng
For the E12-45 Plasma Railgun Project, I gathered recyclable and non-recyclable garbage and used cheap materials to assemble a weapon prop. The process for the project is simple. First, I measured and cut out the general shape of the prop and other miscellaneous parts of the gun and painted the pieces accordingly. Then, I cut out some Styrofoam to function as support beams and connected the two base shapes and added the pieces of garbage using a hot glue gun. The purpose of this project is to explore my imagination and creativity through the shape of each piece of garbage. Furthermore, I want to challenge myself on what I can produce with the materials that I can access and afford using a small amount of money.
