Cracked
- Nathan Moran

For most of my life I pursued a career in mechanical engineering, a field I pretended to have interest in because I felt like I needed to be chasing a “real career,” as I grew up. Then, in 2018 I went to University for it, dropped out, and moved home to figure out what I wanted out of my life. And I rediscovered art and animation as more than something to watch, but as something I could make myself with enough work. I felt reconnected to the joyful, genuine kid I was and wanted to be once more. This project, Cracked, is an extension of this path I’m following. The imagery is pulled from childhood memories, moments with my grandparents, my cat, going to the city for the first time. And every frame is animated in a fluid style meant to imitate the work of Masanobu Hiraoka (incredible animator) in a loose, nostalgia tinted color palette.

Rooted
-
Koketso Lekhethe

Rooted is a combination of an acrylic painting on canvas and wooden drawing/sculpture.

The purpose for the art piece is, I wanted to create a false sense of identity, by combining aspects people associate with sight, confusion, construction and acceptance, hence the wooden drawing. As well as incorporating the use of color and hair, my personal favorite association with identification, I wanted to incorporate a cultural link between hair, and identity. In this way I used colors that hold a cultural significance for me as well as Tatiana Bellaizan, the other subject presented in the artwork. My country of origin being South Africa, Tatiana’s being Colombia. The most predominant color used within the project, that being red, blue, green, and yellow used in both our flags. As well as the representing a figurative connection between us, our homes, and reasons for being here.

Materials: canvas, acrylic paint, ball point pen, HB pencil, Clip studio Paint (Software), wood

Tales of 3 Daughters
-Minju lee

This is an art book that I made for my story from Korean folktales and myth. I wanted to promote Korean traditional culture and history. And I thought the best way is by showing them in a story. 'The Tales of the 3 Daughters' is about the goddesses which through their territories are protecting children. The difference is that one goddess takes care of the living while other takes care about the dead.

I made the concept art and storyboards as an example of how it should be look like. I wanted to show them in different art styles so they could have a different feeling, different atmospheres, and I could know the public preference.

Strokes of Ukraine
- Ibrahim Ishaq

Ukraine was just recently invaded by their neighbours. This has caused a lot of panic and chaos in the country but it also revealed the strength & bravery of the people of Ukraine, especially its leaders, who have set an example to the rest of the world by standing and fighting with their people. However, like Ukraine, many Middle Eastern, Arabic speaking countries, such as Syria, Iran & Palestine, to name a few, have been very similarly invaded by neighbours and/or political superpowers, but have barely received as much support or attention as Ukraine has even after years of suffering. Now, the point of my paintings is not to completely ignore whats happening in Ukraine and immediately change all support to any of these Middle Eastern countries - no; My message here, is by including the Arabic calligraphic words of 'peace', I hope to unify and bring attention to the mindless acts of war and invasion using Ukraine (with my colour palette) and Middle Eastern countries (Using Arabic, a language usually feared) to bring about the idea of Harmony & Togetherness.

Materials: acrylic paint on canvas

Red/Blue
- Gavin Ruim

For this project, I chose something that I had been contemplating for a long time. I wanted to take something from one context and deconstruct it to recreate and align it with an entirely new one.

It shows not only how context and information can be manipulated by the person, people, or corporation putting it together, but it forces one
to question the motivation behind it as well. This is intended to be juxtaposed with the message "in the age of information, ignorance is a choice" - it encourages questioning on the motivation of the artist and their message as well as questioning of what the most factual and unbiased version of the truth is, and how widely available and easily accessible information is to obtain in the current day. Inspiration was drawn from collage art of the Dadaist
movement and the messages and aesthetics of many anarchist street artists.

Materials: wood, paint, paper, glue

Kill
- Deniz Erseven

Some 1100 people are victims of homicide every single day. Although it only makes up less than 1% of total deaths everyday, that number is still insane to me. Through our daily lives we are only exposed to a small percentage of this human-to-human violence. We see it on the news and on social media and we either just ignore it or feel sad for a minute or two before we forget it ever happened. This collage I made is a collection of article headlines that appeared on my daily media feed. Its only about two months worth of headlines that I saw without searching for any of them. I planned this project a long time ago but only wanted to collect recent and new occurrences and I saw 457 peoples’ deaths on my feed. There were many, many more that I missed or that didn’t even make it into the news.

Materials: paper, bulletin board

Build Up
- Maslyn Scott

I have grown up fighting and arguing with the bully that is my brain. I don’t have a lot of sympathy or forgiveness when it comes to the standards I hold myself to. And when these feelings and thoughts build up, it’s hard to see or acknowledge the effort and beauty I may put into something I do, specifically my art. I wanted to make an art piece that allowed me to be more lenient with myself, to be able to just be a beginner and enjoy something rather than striving to immediately be perfect. I wanted this to be a way to illustrate my feelings associated with anxiety and self doubt and the struggles that come along with this. This is me learning to work and grow through build up.

Singita - A Place Of Miracles
-
Caylin Young

Singita – A Place Of Miracles , is the name of my drawing project final artwork. For this I hope to draw the audience in and give them a little piece of what it would be like to be on a South African game reserve. It is my favorite place to be and I love spending time there, so I want to give that experience to my viewer. Through the drawings and photographs that I have taken I want to portray my love for these animals and show how important they are. Each of these animals are integrated and connected to each other, they rely on each other for survival. I feel so strongly about their conservation and protection to make sure they are around for future generations. I hope that when people look at my artwork they get to learn something new and can better understand how things are in African nature.

Materials: paper, acrylic ink, and glow ink

The Rainbow Bridge
-
Chloe Lee

In 2015, I lost my beloved cat. What comforted me, when I was in sorrow at that time, were the stories that originated from the prose poem “Rainbow Bridge.” I've often heard stories of "When a pet dies, it crosses the rainbow bridge," or "After a person dies, a pet that crosses the rainbow bridge first comes to greet me." In the hope that I could meet him again someday, I wanted to create a beautiful afterlife that was pretty well known to people. I'm going to enter the 3D animation department, but I still don't have enough skills about Maya. So I chose 3D modelling to improve my skills while doing this project.

I hope that my work will be a little comfort not only for me, but also for others who have lost their pets.

Materials: digital 3D modelling

Delerium
-
Apurv Swawmi

Delirium is a place of confusion, duality, split personality and mental distress. With these 3 pieces, I have tried to depict the 3 types of of delirium: hypoactive, hyperactive and mixed delirium. I have used coloured lights and coloured gels to create a strong contrast of a bright cool colour blue with a dark warm colour red to paint my self-portrait bringing out an expression of my own confusion and alter ego. While trying to figure out an idea for the project I decided to paint my confusion with lights exploring a special effect known as shutter drag that involves capturing the image using slow shutter speeds and multiple exposures. This creates a still image while capturing a series of abstract. motion-blur portraits.

Materials: photography

Character Props
-
Roenin Lowe

This is a collection of props for a character of my own creation. I enjoy taking small things of everyday use and turning them into different things for the stories I have created. Taking an old hoodie and turning it into a backpack or using butterfly clips to make a pendant. Prop design is something that has always interested me, having grown up hanging around my fathers work at the prop shop of the Stratford Festival Theater. So when given the chance to create something in such an open ended project I turned to something I have loved doing. Challenging myself to learn new skills (sewing, sculpting) and use old ones to complete these props in the style that fits my character.

Materials: Sculpey and fabric

Through the Looking Glass
-Morgan Lal

My interactive art piece explores the concept of closure and how writing letters to people who have wronged you can be a self-reflective process for both the people writing the letters and the people reading them. I have collected 60 letters, that were written anonymously, that are to be hung on the ribbons of my painting as I want this art piece to allow others to think critically of themselves and their peers. We’re all dealing with different types of hurt, whether that be caused by ourselves or by others, but we tend to be desensitized to those struggles in other people. I treated this installation as a middle ground between the observer and a stranger writing a letter in their private space. In a sense, the frame acts as a “doorway” into someone's trauma and I want people to find the sincerity in others' pain.

Materials: Acrylic Paint, Glass, Wooden Frame, Ribbon and Paper Letters

Bleeding Creativity
-Alex Anderson

The creative journey is not always easy.

In Bleeding Creativity I wanted to create a visually intriguing work of art that encapsulates some of those intense emotions. The precision in the black and white checker-board serves as structure and stability. As we get further from the borders it warps under pressure and fades to black. The eye in the center is fluid, messy, and organic and clashes with the background behind it. The earthy blues and greens provide a unique look in the iris which contrasts well with the flaming oranges and reds burning it. Clock hands lost in time point at random as there are no numbers on the clock. A variety of different painting techniques were used to help further distinguish and individualize each component as they come together in one whole cohesive piece.

Materials: acrylic on canvas

Night Time
- Sophia Sandhu

Night Time depicts the lonliness and melancholic feeling that can occur at night when you are alone with your daily thoughts and tasks. This routine can often be continuos and lead to mental burnout without even working yourself too hard. It is a cycle that a lot of people deal with but isn't cared for. People need to treat themselves with more kindness and not always be so tough on themselves. Sometimes just going to bed is the best option.

Materials: Clay, Wire, Cardboard, Stop Motion Animation

Journey
- Cynthia Nguyen

I created "JOURNEY" to challenge myself. I wanted to know how far I could go venturing into a field I was unfamiliar with. Despite putting several hours into this project, I am not happy with the outcome.

Ever since I was young music has been there for me. I often disassociated and ignored the problems brewing around me. Music kept me going for much of my life and it is still essential to me. I wanted the piano to be the main instrument. I started playing music when I was 7. Then stopped when I was 14 and switched my piano lessons to tutoring sessions. I came back to it for this project and it has been nostalgic. The suffering from practicing songs is still the same.

These sound clips tell the story of a wandering traveller. Take a moment and escape reality, can you see the journey he made?

Materials: Bandlab Cakewalk, GarageBand, Huion 1060+ tablet, Clip Studio Paint, Adobe AE

Peace
- Junseok Lee

It has been 49 days since the war began between Ukraine and Russia. I haven't experienced the war myself, but there was a big war lasting three years 72 years ago in my home country, South Korea. That is why I know the pain and cruelty of war. I think everyone knows this even if they don't go through the war themselves. The reason why I chose the war between Ukraine and Russia is not only because there was a 3 year long war in my country, and I thought people's interest in this war was getting lower and lower. I chose this topic because I wanted people to be more interested in the situation in Ukraine. There is nothing I can do for Ukraine directly, but I thought what I can do is stand for Ukraine and pray for them to have a peaceful and secure life as soon as possible.

Materials: Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro

Mind Cave
- Amy Yao

Sometimes people will be influenced by the terms other people use to describe them. They might not agree with those terms but their self-identity will be shifted and people will get lost. They can barely see their path when they can barely see themselves. So I want to remind everyone to get rid of the labels and be the real you. No matter what people think of you, you should be yourself and the real you is always the best.

Materials: Paper/Wire/LED Light/Coffee Filter/ Mirror

Invisible Pressure
- Tina Gao

My work is an acrylic painting about the pandemic. This painting shows the changing mood of people during the pandemic. The theme is sadness. Many people lost their relatives or friends in the epidemic. Their crying faces turned into clouds, and their tears turned into rain. The city is shrouded in darkness. A sick man walks alone in the street, his face mask scattered on the floor. I want this painting to reveal some facts of the pandemic by painting. Many people died because of the virus, some people became homeless and the number of depressed people increased. People’s lives become chaotic and depressed. People stay at home, and nearly nobody is on the street.

Healing with Beading
- Shania Chalifoux

I was motivated to make these beaded creations in order to learn a traditional Indigenous art. This was really meaningful for me because through the Indian Act and colonization in Canada, these traditions were mostly taken away from Indigenous peoples. While making this project I was able to connect with people who are doing similar things. They generously shared their knowledge on the topic which made me feel a sense of community, which is something I could always use more of. The process was empowering and challenging and I am thankful for the opportunity to learn this skill and continue to learn more about Indigenous crafting.

Materials: beads, thread, hard needles deer hide, glue, felt, key chain rings, foraged wood.

The Great Emu War
- Jeremy Armstrong

These 3 pictures are a reflection of society in my country. What we see, what we learn or have been told by our parents or on social media about the society we live in sometimes is not always right. I used to live in a country that was in the process of developing. Most people there are middle class to lower class. The economy there is not great and because of that, corruption and theft are big problems. Everyday, I would see people shooting at each other because of money and sometimes they think the best choice for them to get out of that place is to hang themselves. These 3 pictures represent and are a reflection of the society that I use to live in and how I see the world around me.

Materials: paper, pencil, marker, and brush

Perception
- Blake McDonald

From a young age, our identity is shaped by how others perceive us and how we believe we portray ourselves. I am fascinated with understanding how we are seen by others - is it how we see ourselves? What if we could look through another set of eyes? Would we like what we see? Does it align with our perception of our self? This work is a representation of 3 sets of eyes and how they each perceive one individual.

Materials: acrylic on canvas, paint marker on mylar

Battle and Peace
- Suyeon Kim

The sculpture that I made shows a fighting scene between a human and dragon. When you see the statue, the human stands on the flowers and the dragon is sitting on the trees and looking at the dragon. Each statues has symbolism. Dragons represent war and the disasters that humans cannot handle, which means that dragons are the disasters that humans need to face. The human represents us, the ordinary people who are living in the 21st century. Lastly, the flowers represent the peace that we are having right now. It can also be interpreted to mean we are protecting the peace from disasters.

Materials: board, papers, wires, watercolor

Land Of Sabrosura
- Tatiana Bellaizan Dominguez

With my project I wanted to explore with Adobe to illustrate the idea of how I see the Colombian landscape. Grains are essential as I hope to generate curiosity specifically from the countryside, where great fruits and food are produced. Later they are transported to all citizens, making it possible for us to have food prepared at home. For me it is important to show a colorful place that demonstrates one of the important areas where the hard work of the farmers is seen and demonstrates the value of their actions. I share a little piece of passion and I share the achievement of my country, which became the second largest export market in South America. I hope you discover where the magic of flavor comes from.

Materials: condimients: paprika, salt , flour, archiras. illustration = Adobe.

Applebum
- Takuto Kimura

I was just wondering where creativity comes from. We have had braimstormings on chairs recently. But I strongly believe our creativities come from not only our brains but our whole bodies. Basically, we use some of our bodys to express arts. Dance is a represntative example to express feeling with whole bodies. Additionally, there is no specific storyline and verbal communication in my movie because I want more people to enjoy my movie. I hope dance will be a kind of common langauges.

Heaven, Hell, but the Void That Takes Us
- Jared Chocolate

These three skate boards are a depection of Heaven, Hell, and a purple void. The whole piece is a depiction of Nihlism. The only certainty is death. The void depicts the entropy of this certainty. It’s an ominous void that takes the dead away from us and makes us forget and eventually become forgotten ourselves. Its a void thats slowly killing us each day and the only solace we have is believing that there is a heaven or hell instead of the void that takes.

The reasons why the paintings are on skateboards:

1. Skateboards are mostly used by youth, who are usually at their most emotional stage of their life and would ponder on Nilhism and the meaning of life often during this stage.

2. It serves as a metaphor as the paintings are on the underside of the boards away from the rider. Whoever rides these boards are above thinking about Nihlist thoughts and face away from them as a result.

The Ice and Fire
- Randy Luo

”The Ice and Fire” are views of the Stanley park seawall in different locations. I used the primary red and yellow as background colors for “fire”, dark blue and white for “ice”. I love to stroll along the different seawalls in Vancouver, especially the one in the downtown area and I have a lot of good memories from there. This project explores the idea of the uncertain weather in Vancouver: it can be sunny and restless or cloudy and cool.
