Ọdinani
- Violet Osarollor
Having lived in two Western countries now (England and Canada), I have gone through the anger of learning how my cultures were demonized; languages and traditions either not passed down or going extinct because of colonization and slavery. This project is an ode to my reconciliation with what was stripped from my people. Not wanting to be angry anymore and be grateful for the resilience of my people for the cultures we've been able to keep. Especially being of dual heritage: Eleme and Igbo, one of which is endangered and the latter so intertwined with Catholicism.
In this piece, I situate the Igbo religion (Ọdinani) in a western Romanticism setting. The duality of growing up in a Nigeria that so badly wanted to be "Western".
The characters in the field are some personal interpretations of some gods and goddesses of Ọdinani mythology. From L-R: Ala (Mother Nature), Ikenga (god of strength), Ekwensu (god of tricks and the tortoise) and Anyanwu (eye of the sun).

Riddle, Wrapped In a Mystery, Inside a Puzzle
- Emma Hawa
The Lebanese government is structured based on the census that was conducted in 1932. This raises the question of whether it truly represents its population. The reason why a census has not been conducted since was to keep the status quo between the different sects that form the Lebanese population. However, data has been collected in the recent years that shows how this demography has evolved.
This 3D printed puzzle displays the 18 sects, recognized by the government, that form the Lebanese population. The first layer represents the 1932 census, in pale colors, and the second layer shows how the population has evolved since, in bolder colors.
As a Lebanese, I was brought up knowing of these different sects, making the complicated ordinary because it made sense to me. This is why I chose to do a puzzle. A complex kid-game.

The Right of Four
- Mia Hucal
The Right of Four are 4 graphic design based posters I made surrounding important topics in my life.
For the aesthetics of the posters, I wanted to base them off of 2022 graphic design trends. During my research, I chose to include the trends of minimalist retro, risograph print effects, paper cut out effects and anti design. Graphic design has always sparked my interest, therefore, I wanted to learn more about it and the current trends for my project.
Since it’s something I’m passionate about, I wanted to make the posters about social rights and global issues. I chose 4 topics that related to my life: LGBTQ+ rights, global warming, mental health awareness, and women’s rights. I chose to use these topics as I have a deeper understanding of what they truly are since I experience them on a daily basis.
Materials: Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, 11 x 17 paper
The Ringleader
- Sidney Jenkins
As part of a traditional family, I was raised as a Catholic, and attended a Roman Catholic school ever since I was a child. Because of this I have come to learn both sides of the church, and I eventually strayed from the Catholic religion, since my beliefs and values were much different.
This piece portrays the struggles we, as humans, have created for ourselves in a modern society. We create ideas and beliefs to feel secure in our mortality, yet it is those beliefs and ideas that have trapped us in society. The circus train is meant to represent that we as humans are also animals, meant to enjoy our natural and primitive instincts, however we are caged in, and suffering. While God, the Ring Leader, represents the restrictions and limitations we put on ourselves to give life meaning.

La Llorona
- Paulina Espinosa
La Llorona is a popular Mexican Folktale I grew up hearing from my parents and family back in Mexico. It's a story I've always found fascinating and scary. I found it interesting to hear how the description of this famous character changed from person to person, however most would have the same description; white ripped dress, barefoot, scary looking face, black hair, filthy clothes. That is why for this project I decided to give her a new look and sculpt her as I've always imagined her. In my mind, I see her as a person that suffers, hence her facial expression. I also see her as someone that would dress particularly elegant which is why I added simple gold pieces of jewellery. And finally, I wanted to represent her in black clothing particularly since her story is a story of grief and sorrow as she is known for weeping the loss of her children she herself killed.

Waterfall Stories
-Felicia Quinonez
This exhibition features 25 waterfall cards done with 5 different mediums. Each card tells a different narrative using only visuals. By using different mediums, I hope to convey a different feeling in each narrative and explore the art of storytelling. I want to focus on storytelling because I’ve always been fascinated by those who can tell a whole story with just one picture. To do this, I’ve decided to use waterfall cards to help display my narratives, and every time a new image is revealed, the story progresses. I’ve decided to display my waterfall cards in a miniature library bookshelf because it’s like a collection of miniature stories, and it will help my theme of storytelling. Overall, I am quite proud of what I have accomplished and I have learned many new skills that I can use in future projects.

The Knight & The Mermaid
- Nichelle Partridge
I usually struggle with my own ethnicity of being of mixed race western European and Filipino. I chose to feature the 1500's Spanish voyages of Ferdinand Magellan, and his exploration to the Philippines. I chose to display it as a Zoetrope because it used to be an early way that was used in film making. It is a projector that fools the eyes using reels playing through in motion. The culture of the Philippines was under longtime colonialism. The story that I want to present is a love story between two different people from different cultures, and also the Filipino culture though it’s folktales.

Reflection
-Denzel Irawan
Mirrors have always been part of our everyday lives. We see it every time in the washroom, but when was the last time you took a good look at yourself and reflected on your life? Everyone has their own challenges and battles. Reflection, invites you to tackle your challenges. It is an interactive sculpture; the base of the sculpture is made of clay and designed to mimic the idea of being pulled in. The hand is 3D printed, designed to mimic tension towards the individual trying to escape. These are then glued to an empty shell of a mirror and accompanied with broken mirror fragments simulating an everyday mirror. The interactive aspect is where there are holes with scrolls that act as life challenges surrounding the sculpture. The audience have the decision to tackle the challenge and replace it with another challenge or choose to read the challenge and back down.

Cooking With Sweets
- J Smith
Essentially this was meant to be a super lighthearted animation to blow off some steam I've been building up since term one. Honestly, the character himself is a commentary on a super specific niche form of veganism that I encountered when I was around 9-10 that was PETA driven. Basically I'm poking fun at militant vegans but also sorta poking fun at people who eat meat. The animation is all in good fun and I was mainly focused on seeing how good I could make it look with limited assets and a time constraint.

Flower & Death
- Emily Ai
Cherry blossoms blooming are famous for their beauty of the fleeting moment. During Vancouver cherry blossoms season, it reminds me of a concept from Japan called "mono no aware" which means the awareness of impermanence, or transience of things. It is both a transient gentle sadness at their passing as well as a longer, deeper gentle sadness about this state being the reality of life. I recorded the process of a flower's death, sharing the emotion with the audience, and a Wabi-Sabi style painting with dead flower petals to commemorate the whole process of life.
Materials: canvas, flower petals, acrylic paint
Karner Blue
- Anika McCamley
My artwork explores the beauty of the Karner Blue butterfly. I picked this butterfly because I found it very interesting that their adult lifespan is only 5 days long and they can only eat the wild lupine flower. I tried to recreate that beauty by learning hand embroidery. I tried to recreate the way the colours blend together on the natural texture of the wings with the direction and colour mix of the threads. I chose a simple cotton fabric as the material to allow the colours to stand out and used standard embroidery threads.
I’ve always been inspired by bugs. There’s beauty in them. Beyond butterflies, there is the pattern and colouring of bees to beetles. Some are designed to blend into their surroundings and some are built to stand out.
Materials: embroidery hoop, thread, and Illustrator
Fool's Paradise
- Matias Castillo
Fool’s paradise is a visual story in the form of a 2D digital animation. The story portrays the loss of power of a greedy and foolish leader as he is thrown off in a rally by his own people. Fool’s paradise is set in a steampunk inspired world with a mix of colonial Peruvian architecture.
With my animation I wanted to tell a more personal story that shows something from my own life, Fool’s paradise depicts the current events going on in Peru as the current president Pedro Castillo is getting overthrown by Peru’s citizens. With my animation I wanted to show the perspective of the foolish leader as he looses everything right before his eyes.

"wish I could be honest"
-Kosuke Haraguchi
The song is about a wish to get out of the whirlpool of stress created by being too endurable.
Everybody holds at least one secret. Sometimes people keep it for benefit but sometimes people hide things to feel safe or comfortable.
I am the latter. I feel safe when I hide things but at the same time I feel negative and heavy feelings accumulate deep inside of my heart and I try to ignore them. Ignoring helps at that moment but I can feel the negative feeling getting heavy day by day.
I also want to mention anything is possible if you are passionate about it. I’m not a music producer, not a singer and have no experience playing instruments. Yet I completed composing one song with decent quality and I believe it could be better. I could have done this because I was really passionate about this project.

This Is Not Happening
- Katerina Mark
Modern Russia is a country built on lies and propanganda. The richest people with all the power are trying hard to make their reality pretty, but the reality of those outside them is nothing but ugly and sad.
Materials: mixed media
Kababaihan
- Danica Mariz Rivera
Being a Filipino woman living and raised in Canada, I did not have a deep connection to my culture. So I wanted to to take the opportunity to learn a little bit of the evolution of women in the Philippines. From the years of Pre-colonialism, Colonialism and lastly, the Present.
The drastic change I found was in the clothing and this greatly interested me. The information was very scarce, so unfortunately, I could not get accurate information on many things.
As time passes by and washes away tradition and documentation, art and stories still stand like the pigmentation from watercolour.
Materials: watercolour paint, pencil crayons, cardboard, acrylic paint
Teacup
- Hallina Axelsson
My project is a simulation of how I, as a person with adhd, relax when I'm experiencing overstimulation. A comfortable, small, soft area where I can listen to some chill music. I did my own vocals and built a blanket fort with some of my favourite blankets.
Special thanks to Sadie Cyr for helping me understand music theory and how to form lyrics.

Kartini
-Leonardo Lois
Growing up in Indonesia there is a lot of social injustice towards race, religion and especially against women. There are also a lot of good things in Indonesia such as Batik and the island of Bali. This project is about embroidering famous things in Indonesia such as Batik and Barong and mixing them together into one piece on a picture of R.A Kartini, who fought for women's rights in the 1800's. She is a voice for many women in Indonesia.

Mick And His Tiger Dream
- Fannie Lee
Mick is a hamster. He likes tigers very much. In order to be more like the tiger he likes, he wants to draw tiger stripes on his head (he didn't plan to draw the back because his hands are too short). Mick tried. He used different pens or paints to paint on his head, but all these methods were unsuccessful. He finally gave up and slept sadly. In a dream Mick dreamed that he had tiger stripes on his head and successfully turned into a tiger. Congratulations.

Almighty Gandhi
- Vedant Bhati
A focus on India's current socio-political unrest, Indian TV media's manipulation of masses, manufactured hatred towards minorities and economically weaker class, and complete ignorance by free world leaders of the fact that fascism is rising again.
Materials: screen and headphones
Wu Xing
- Hanxu Li
This is an interactive maze project for everyone to have fun with, but be gentle with it. It contains a game, divination, interactive, and collage elements, but do not be too serious with the results, you will still live for your own identity. This project aspires to make people have fun with it and also gain some interest in ancient Chinese creatures and culture in general. I hope you can enjoy it.

One's Eye
-Inseob Shim
One's Eye is paint with mirror collage. This is a self-portrait. Through this work, I express the owners of the eyes that surround me. This is a painting of what I feel in the eyes of other people. Not everyone does, but sometimes, some people judge with prejudice that I'm Asian. For example, "Oh, that person is Asian, so he will not be able to speak English." "He wouldn't know this." I am not an unbiased person and I've also judge people before. But after I came to Canada, I knew what my behaviour was like. In this work, I wanted to show them directly what the owners of the eyes look like when they wear coloured glasses or judge me.

Consumed
- Allyana Denise Y. Alviar
My project is a painting that represents the Philippines. I wanted to show people something that represents where I came from, grew up, my roots and my home. My painting shows Culture and Tradition that we have in the Philippines but I wanted to incorporate something modern in it and how capitalism, cosumerism and our material obsession will look like “back in the day.”
My first painting is a faceless portrait of a girl in a Philippine costume, taking a mirror selfie with her smart phone, face mask and airpods on.
The second painting is a Boodle fight which is a very popular food tradition in the Philippines in which you have to eat Filipino food in a banana leaf along with other people, using only your hands and no utensils. It is like a competition.
Materials: acrylic painting
Noscar
- Nikhil Syriac
I began the project by asking myself what I wanted to do and what kind of message I wanted to convey. The cars that were made are similar to some real life cars with a bit of modification. I wanted to make a race with some cars that I built. The project was about trying to craft a story about a racer who comes from a less privileged background who has the passion and determination to make it, hence why the different type of cars and classes. This project was meant to be a video. Unfortunately, things didn't work out. The race was going to have the lower class vehicle start from the back and slowly make its way up on top or at least close to it. The message I wanted to give was hard work and self belief can help you reach whatever you've dreamt of.
